Brad Stevens’s June 1 press conference was embarrassing for the Boston Celtics as he continued to echo the same themes of the last decade. The overall themes highlight that the Celtics feel they can do no wrong and that they live in their own fairyland.

No Boston Celtics fan should listen to that press conference and feel good about the direction of the franchise.

Stevens has done a decent job adding pieces to the C’s core over the years, but I think he fails to see the bigger picture. Now would be the perfect time to voice some frustration about the season being a failure, but that’s clearly not in his character.

Stevens seems afraid to go after his star players and the core that failed again. This is a major issue for the Boston Celtics, as it appears that complacency continues to occur within the organization.

Examples of this include Stevens echoing the sentiment that they are looking to maintain the status quo for next season. Also, Stevens mentioned that the Celtics were top two in offense and defense in the regular season, so they don’t have to fix much. This is an embarrassing statement from Stevens because he is not willing to make tough decisions regarding the core.

The Boston Celtics should want more than to ‘remain in the mix’

Another statement that should disgust Celtics fans is that they are just looking to make small changes to ultimately remain “in the mix.” This is a quote that should disgust fans because just remaining in the mix is not enough when you have Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Pressure needs to be applied, and the championship standard needs to be maintained. Hoping to remain in the mix is being complacent, and that’s not the mindset that the C’s should be in right now.

The 2023 offseason appears to be off to a poor start, but Stevens’ actions could ultimately tell the tale of this summer — since his words appear to not be compatible with what the team’s mission should be moving forward.
