It’s unknown how exactly the 2022-23 season will be remembered for the Boston Celtics, but the offseason will not be remembered for the team making one of the most unpopular trades the franchise could ever make.

Da Windy City’s Ryan Heckman concocted a mock trade proposal that’d send the C’s second-best player — and best player during the 2022 Finals and on many nights during the 2022-23 regular season –, Jaylen Brown, and Eastern Conference Finals Game 6 hero Derrick White to the Bulls for Zach LaVine and a future first-round draft pick that’s lottery-protected.

Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens would hang up the phone on this faster than he would an offer from the Magic offering a re-do on the Jayson Tatum-Markelle Fultz situation from the 2017 NBA draft. At least Stevens would have a good laugh with Orlando GM John Hammond for the level of irony and the reminder of how good of a pick Tatum was considering Boston was the team that got a pick in the exchange.

Derrick White may have secured never being traded by the Boston Celtics with Eastern Conference Finals Game 6 game-winner

After what White did in the closing seconds of Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals — saving the 2022-23 Celtics season and potentially keeping the door open for Banner 18 –, it’s hard to picture No. 9 being traded anytime soon. If ever.

White’s value is more to Boston than it is anywhere else, and his fit next to Tatum and Brown has potentially helped solidify his long-term with the Celtics.

The Boston Celtics can get more in a Jaylen Brown trade

Let’s explore the possibility the Celtics don’t end up with Banner 18 but instead, fall short yet again. Given what Brown has said about the city of Boston in the past year, a trade request isn’t the most far-fetched possibility.

In that scenario, the front office will have failed to get LaVine to replace both Brown and White. Brown should only be dealt for a true difference-maker who’s similarly aged.
