Shocking trade update on player supposedly on Boston Celtics offseason trade block
The Boston Celtics may see a player who was supposedly on the offseason trade block, Payton Pritchard, stick with the team if the shocking update from an Eastern Conference executive bears fruit in the coming months.
“It would be a surprise if they move him unless they get a very good offer,” the executive told Heavy’s Sean Deveney. This is seemingly at odds with what Pritchard wants out of his career given the lack of a clear role moving forward with Marcus Smart, Derrick White, and Malcolm Brogdon locked in long-term.
“I definitely do. It’s obviously what I work for. I think that’s what Brad and them know, too,” Pritchard told Evan Turner and Andre Iguodala on the January 28 edition of the Point Forward podcast. “We’ve had that discussion but — a bigger role. I want to be part of a winning culture but I want to also help that, be a really big piece of that. I’m not saying it’s the best player on the team but I don’t know what my future holds unless I can take that next step. I don’t know what it is in five or 10 years but I just want to look back and know that I put my best foot forward. I put all the work in so whatever happens I can live with as long as I did it my way. That’s the most important thing for me.”
The Magic could engage Boston Celtics in Payton Pritchard trade talks
According to Deveney, the Boston Celtics could have a potential Pritchard trade suitor in the Magic — who was deemed an “interesting potential fit” for the Oregon product.
“You see it more and more that teams want to wait to give a player the extension, then trade him when the extension kicks in because it gives you higher leverage,” the anonymous executive prefaced before saying, “Orlando has had its eye on him; that is an interesting potential fit.”
The Celtics have a tradeable asset who has voiced displeasure with his role, but Banner 18 can produce sweet emotion from all sides. We shall see what part of Deveney’s report wins the narrative this summer.
