The Boston Celtics have had the luxury of watching some of the best players in NBA history suit up for the franchise. But since the team’s first season back in 1946, no player has ever averaged over 30 points per game in a season. Following an April 7 home win against Toronto, that all changed.
Entering the second-to-last regular season game of the year, Jayson Tatum was averaging just over 30 points per game. Tatum played in only the first half of the win over Toronto, but in his time on the court, the Duke product put up 20 points, four assists, and three rebounds on 7/12 shooting from the floor.
Jayson Tatum makes Boston Celtics history again
With Tatum likely to take a rest night in Sunday’s season finale against the Hawks, the 25-year-old star is on pace to become the first Celtic in history to average over 30 points per game. Tatum is now averaging 30.1 points per game on the season while shooting an efficient 46.6% on field goals and 35.0% from 3-point range.
The versatile forward has been on track to break the record eventually after constantly improving year after year. Tatum managed to do just that in his sixth season as a pro.
Now, the four-time All-Star looks to add on to his already historic season by redeeming himself and his team following last year’s disappointing ending. If Tatum can continue scoring at an elite level and stay aggressive as a playmaker, the Celtics chance to run the table in the postseason will only increase.
But for now, Tatum sits in a room alone as the only Boston Celtic in franchise history to average over 30 points per game in a season. The St. Louis native is only just getting started; it’s only a matter of time before he adds his name to yet another part of history for the Cs.
