Top 5 Free Agent Signings in Boston Celtics History
By John Canady
1. Al Horford
Al Horford signed a four-year, $113 million deal with the Celtics in 2016. He came in to make an immediate impact for the team, giving them a consistent defensive anchor in the paint—something Boston had lacked for a while. The team would find success with Horford, including three straight Eastern Conference Finals appearances.
Shortly after Boston’s collapse in the 2018-19 playoffs, Horford would decide to depart from the team to sign a max extension with the Philadelphia 76ers, leaving the Celtics fans in disbelief. It would take only two years for the former NCAA champion to find himself back home with the Celtics.
In 2021, the new President of Basketball Operations, Brad Stevens, made it a point to bring Horford back to Boston. The same year of Big Al’s return, the C’s would find themselves in the NBA Finals, where they would fall short to the Warriors in six games.
The big man’s tenure is far from over as he looks to add to his resume with Boston.
