Pursuing Danny Green would be pursuing someone who has what the Boston Celtics currently lack on their roster — a veteran player whose not only won championships at several stops, but has been featured heavily on those teams.
Green, who was traded to Houston as part of the three-team trade that sent Luke Kennard to the Grizzlies, Eric Gordon back to the Clippers, and awkwardly landed John Wall back on the Rockets following recent criticisms of the franchise, could be bought out given the lack of a fit with his new rebuilding employer. At 35, Green can be a mentor, but he is in his career’s twilight given his ACL tear in 2022. Winning one last ring and sailing off into the sunset as the only player to ever win a ring on four different teams is the last meaningful goal Green could have.
Boston.com’s Conor Roche pointed out how Green’s achievements would be the primary selling point should he be added to the buyout market talent pool:
"“Green, 35, would not only give the Celtics even more perimeter shooting than they already have, but he would also give them championship experience, something that they lack. He’s won three NBA titles over his career, playing an integral role for three teams (the Spurs in 2014, the Raptors in 2019, and the Lakers in 2020) to help lift the Larry O’Brien Trophy.”"
What the Boston Celtics are looking for in a buyout market addition
The Boston Celtics would be adding someone on the buyout market who would need to accept a role behind Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Sam Hauser — given Hauser’s recent resurgence shooting the basketball — on the team moving forward. As Brad Stevens explained, the team may not find a suitor for the role being asked of prospective free agent additions:
"“I don’t blame anybody that wouldn’t want to fill that role. I think we’re really deep right now. And we already have a bunch of guys that are giving up for one cause. If there was something that moves the needle even differently, then we have to consider it obviously, but I think that that’s probably the most likely thing.”"
Don’t count on Green or any other potential addition doing much more than hitting the occasional 3-pointer in any Celtics role barring injury. He’d be great Hauser insurance, but the Cs would need a lot more than who is available to cover an injury to any of the starters.
