The Boston Celtics need to extend Jaylen Brown ASAP
Back in 2019, Jaylen Brown signed a four-year extension to stay with the Boston Celtics. By doing so, he agreed to sign for less than the full max. He now has this season and next, and then he’s a free agent.
If you’re a Boston sports fan you just had the pain of a star Boston player reaching free agency when he shouldn’t have even sniffed it and being ripped away by a team willing to pay. Now, the circumstances may be different, plus, it was a completely different sport, but I don’t want that happening again.
Jaylen Brown could be eligible for a max contract with the Boston Celtics
According to Celtics Wire, Jaylen Brown could be eligible for a five year, $290 million contract extension if he makes an All-NBA team of any level. So far this season, Brown is averaging 27 points, seven boards, and 3 assists with a true shooting percentage of 58.8%, on pace to be career highs for all, minus the dimes. If you look at last years All-NBA third team, Brown would have the third best points and third best rebounds.
Now, there’s more to decide who gets the nod for the All-NBA teams than just points and rebounds, but Brown is certainly making a case for himself. If you want to look just at his numbers, he has progressed every single season since he entered the league. Every year he’s gone up in points, rebounds, and field goal percentage just to name a few.
Even though this season still has plenty of games left, I think it’s a fair assumption to think that he’ll keep these kinds of numbers up and next season will progress more in those aspect, plus others.
How much he’ll progress is the question.
This is where we have to thank Brad Stevens. Stevens was able to get rid of Kemba Walker’s monstrous contract, extend Smart and Williams to team friendly extensions.
Keeping Brown long-term should be a priority for this team, no matter how much it costs. Right now, Tatum and Brown are undoubtedly a top-three duo in the league and honestly, I could make the argument for the Jays being the top duo, but that’s not the point.
Every year, both players have gotten better and better and they’re still not even in the prime of their career. They’re both under 27! If Boston wants to stay competitive in a league that seems very top heavy now, they need to bring back Jaylen Brown.
When you look at the Celtics, it’s not a one-two duo with Tatum and Brown; its a 1a-1b type system. That is something you cannot destroy under any circumstance.
I’m not the biggest basketball finance brain, but I know that Jaylen Brown is worth a lot of money and the Boston Celtics need to extend him ASAP. Just give the man a blank check please.
