Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens weighed in on what the league-leading Cs may need at the February 9 trade deadline — and it certainly aligns with the small-splash chatter the team’s deadline plans have been projected to be.

While speaking on the January 29 edition of 98.5 the SportsHub’s Celtics Show, Stevens laid out a deadline plan that keeps things simple: support the core but don’t decimate a group that has proven itself in the postseason trenches together.

Here were Stevens’ comments during his radio appearance ahead of the C’s national television matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday night (h/t NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg):

"“We have a really good core that’s played together in big moments, that understands what those moments are like, and knows how to get to where we ultimately want to go. I think what is probably more likely is evaluating how to fortify your depth, how to make sure you are as foolproof as possible.”“I think when I look at it from the big picture assessment, I would say that we’re a team that, if we stay relatively healthy and focus on some areas to improve on both ends of the floor, iron some very small things out that are very manageable, we can be in the mix.”"

Brad Stevens bullish on the Boston Celtics but doesn’t see them as clear favorite

Brad Stevens recognized the Boston Celtics were “in the mix” as a highly-favored contender, but he was unwilling to go as far as to say the team is head and shoulders above the field and didn’t need to explore tinkering it’s roster. He shouted out the Bruins as a team that’s on a higher level of operation than the Cs are currently at.

Teams like the Milwaukee Bucks, who took the Celtics to seven games during the 2022 postseason without Khris Middleton, and Miami Heat, who also took the Cs to seven, are proven difficult outs in the playoffs. The Brooklyn Nets at full strength could be a far different beast than the swept foes of last playoffs.

Stevens is smart to see that any ground gained could be the difference in a competitive east.
