The Boston Celtics are one rough stretch away from being in trade conversations given the parity in the 2022-23 NBA. With the Brooklyn Nets surging, Milwaukee Bucks hanging tough without Khris Middleton, and the Philadelphia 76ers figuring it out themselves, the Cs are not far and away the best team in even their own conference.

If the Cs front office does eventually decide to get back into wheeling and dealing — which is something President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens has never, at any point, proven unwilling to do — NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg has a number of potential trade targets in mind.

Josh Hart

The first trade deadline target is one the Boston Celtics would need an injury or a serious shooting slump from the entire second unit to ever seriously pursue, Portland Trail Blazers forward Josh Hart. Hart took off after being dealt to Portland on February 8, 2022, but he’s settled into more of a complementary role with Damian Lillard back in the lineup and Jerami Grant’s arrival over the summer.

Hart would be, as NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg points out, a great backcourt complement to Malcolm Brogdon. But with Derrick White already in place at $16 million, Hart at $13 million over the next two years would give the Celtics a bloated cap sheet.

Verdict: Pass
