The Boston Celtics were given a sizable spread to cover on Saturday, January 7 when they travel to the AT&T Center in San Antonio to take on the Spurs — a squad that is coming off a win over the Detroit Pistons in the first night of a back-to-back Friday night.

While the Spurs’ record is representative of a team squarely in the middle of the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes, they still are a Gregg Popovich-coached unit. That alone makes them competitive from the first buzzer until the talent discrepancy against their foes kicks in.

The thing is, though, that it might never kick in against the Celtics. Playing down to competition has been a major pitfall for Joe Mazzulla’s group in 2022-23, with a loss to the Shai Gilgeous-Alexander-less Oklahoma City Thunder this past Tuesday and a pair of losses to the Orlando Magic prior to Christmas, unfortunately, breathing life into that statement. Boston is just a game ahead of the scorching-hot Brooklyn Nets in the standings and cannot afford to drop any more games in which they are significantly favored. Not for the sake of Cs bettors everywhere expecting better on these kinds of nights.

That brings us to tonight. Are the Spurs up for the challenge of facing the No. 1 team in the league? Or will the Cs take care of business as they are expected to, according to Las Vegas sportsbooks? Hardwood Houdini has your odds and a prediction for the Saturday battle between the Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs on NBC Sports Boston (all odds provided by WynnBET):

Boston Celtics vs. San Antonio Spurs odds, spread, over/under

According to WynnBet, the Celtics are 12.5-point favorites against the Spurs on the road. The over/under for the game has been placed at 235 points.

Celtics vs. Spurs prediction

San Antonio is missing a lot of talent on Saturday, and they’ll be coming in on the second night of a back-to-back. The Houdini is cautiously leaning against the trend of Boston underperforming against inferior competition.

Lay that 12.5.

Pick: Celtics -12.5 (-110)
