The most important game of the young Boston Celtics season so far takes place Saturday, December 10 when the defending Eastern Conference champions march into the Chase Center to face the team that prevents them from being addressed in a higher honor.

That would be the Golden State Warriors, the defending NBA champions that don’t look anything close to the level they were at last season — though that may be by design to preserve their aging core throughout a long season.

Things have been strained in the Bay since before the season when a video got leaked of Draymond Green knocking Jordan Poole out with a superman punch during a team practice less than two weeks before the season.

While Poole is still progressing to borderline All-Star and Steph Curry is playing at a near-MVP level, there’s simply something missing about this year’s squad. The lack of Gary Payton Jr. and Otto Porter, who moved on in free agency to sign with the Portland Trail Blazers and Toronto Raptors, respectively, is a big reason. But their overall defensive lethargy is the biggest reason.

That’s a big problem about a historic Celtics offense that owns the highest points per possession average in the history of the NBA. Can Golden State turn back the clock and slow down Joe Mazzulla’s high-scoring bullet train?
