That the Boston Celtics have been able to overcome this past offseason’s various setbacks — which included a last-minute coaching switch before training camp and a massive injury to the team’s starting center and top offseason signing — is a testament to how strong this team’s core is.

That begs the question: do the Cs need to make any significant changes to its roster, even as Boston awaits the return of Robert Williams III to manning the paint as the starting lineup’s defensive anchor?

The answer may just be no considering the Celtics’ red-hot start, good for the best record in either conference through the first 20% of the 2022-23 schedule. Still, if another injury in the frontcourt or a setback for ‘The Timelord’ occurs, popular San Antonio Spurs trade target Jakob Poeltl could become Boston’s next pressing pursuit.

HoopsHabit’s Cal Durrett set the price for Poeltl in his latest for our FanSided all-things-NBA sister site at Luke Kornet, a future first-round draft pick, future second-rounder(s), and Danilo Gallinari — who’d need to be re-routed to a third team since San Antonio just waived Gallinari this past offseason.

The Boston Celtics would have a perfect roster after such a deal for Jakob Poeltl

Once Robert Williams III returns, the Boston Celtics will have a roster that is damn near close to perfect. The only thing missing would be a definitive backup center, which they don’t have currently as Noah Vonleh and Luke Kornet scrap for second unit minutes.

Jakob Poeltl would be the best gettable option without disrupting their core too much, considering HoopsHabit’s Cal Durrett is likely close to, if not right on, the money regarding what it would take to land him.

With a bench comprised of Malcolm Brogdon, Derrick White, Sam Hauser, Grant Williams, and Poeltl, the Cs would have a second unit that’d likely be better than what some of the tanking teams will be presenting at the end of the season. Payton Pritchard as an 11th man would be an embarrassment of riches for Boston.
