Any moment now, Boston Celtics fans expect President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens to find the perfect rotation replacement for the recently injured Danilo Gallinari, who tore his ACL during FIBA competition and forced him to miss EuroBasket 2022.

The expected next move for the Cs is a Carmelo Anthony signing, which the Boston Globe reports is ‘gaining traction.’ Jayson Tatum’s recent social media activity is certainly lending credence to that idea as well.

That’d be an easy transaction, but what’s easy isn’t always what is best. Hardwood Houdini sees the rivalry motivation with both the Los Angeles Lakers via the LeBron James connection and the New York Knicks from his hellish final days under then-President of Basketball Operations Phil Jackson and sees Melo as a great potential signing.

But Anthony’s propensity to take out-of-rhythm shot attempts could disrupt the Boston Celtics offense more so than Gallinari’s presence would have. A player who MassLive’s Brian Robb sees as a more suitable Gallinari replacement is Bojan Bogdanovic, and he explained why in a piece answering the question of whether the Celtics could find a trade with the rebuilding Jazz to bolster the roster after Gallinari’s injury:

"“This would be the perfect type of sharpshooter to replace Gallinari’s production. However, his lofty salary will make Boston pursuing any kind of deal here a major challenge. Boston would need to send out just over $15 million in salary to make any trade work and that would involve moving a piece of the team’s core rotation. Bogdanovic is a nice piece but he’s not worth tearing up the rotation for.”"

The Boston Celtics don’t have a trade match with the rebuilding Jazz

Though Rudy Gay has been floated as a TPE target that’d cost very little in a trade, Brian Robb wasn’t a fan of acquiring him and the remaining two years in his contract — or at least believed Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens would be.

In fact, he wasn’t a fan of the Cs pursuing any of the remaining veterans on Utah’s roster that Danny Ainge is almost certainly going to find a new home for considering the Jazz’ ongoing rebuilding job.

It doesn’t appear as though Ainge and his former protégé Stevens will be coming together on a deal before training camp. Of course, injuries could change things as the season progresses, but Boston is more likely to go the free agent route.

Best-case proposal adds perfect role player to Cs core. dark. Next
