The trade talks (whether ongoing or not) between the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets regarding a Kevin Durant trade could have a trickle-down effect on Jaylen Brown’s own relationship with the Cs front office.

So far, reports of dissension between Boston and its 1A star appear to be overblown as Brown has designs to be a long-term member of the franchise — with one source saying he is ‘all in’ on the prospect of being a Celtic.

Still, other teams around the ‘Association’ are likely now licking their chops at the chance to capitalize on any further tension that arises between Brown and the Boston Celtics moving forward.

Consider the San Antonio Spurs one of the teams that could be interested in his services come the summer of 2024 when he is eligible for a new contract during his first foray into unrestricted free agency.

Grant Afseth of ‘Inside The Spurs’ made the case that if the Spurs front office simply plays its cards right and manages their cap-sheet responsibly, San Antonio could make for a dark-horse free agency play for No. 7:

"“If the Spurs maintain significant cap space as expected and add a few intriguing prospects organically through the NBA Draft, it appears they could at least offer Brown an intriguing situation to consider signing to join.”"

Losing Jaylen Brown in the summer of 2024 is a doomsday scenario for the Boston Celtics

If Jaylen Brown leaves the Boston Celtics high and dry in two years, the front office will be facing a doomsday scenario. With sizeable salaries already being paid to Jayson Tatum, Marcus Smart, and Derrick White already on the 2024-25 cap-sheet, and potential long-term extensions looming for Al Horford and Grant Williams this offseason or next, Boston won’t likely have the means to replace Brown in free agency.

If the Cs don’t land Kevin Durant in a trade–and it’s not looking terribly likely at this point with MassLive’s Brian Robb seeing a 25% chance something happens–making sure Brown is happy moving forward needs to be the goal.

If by February 2024 Brown has still not indicated that he would be willing to re-up with the Celtics, exploring something at the trade deadline would be their only choice to extract any value from someone who would then bolt Boston that July anyway.
