Boston Celtics are ‘where Kevin Durant sees his best future now’

After Kevin Durant’s camp threatened Brooklyn Nets ownership that they either were to trade him or fire the front office and head coach, it became clear that the game’s most talented scorer was almost certainly going to find a new home this offseason. The best part? He may believe the Boston Celtics organization is the best place for his future.

Of course, Durant had interest in the Celtics back in the summer of 2016, where he ended up breaking the internet by signing a deal to join the same Golden State Warriors squad that had just eliminated his Oklahoma City Thunder during that season’s Western Conference finals. Now, six years later, he could be joining a team that swept him out of the Eastern Conference playoffs’ first round.

NBC Sports’ Pro Basketball Talk host Kurt Helin said that ‘if you connect the dots,’ the Boston Celtics appear to be where Durant sees ‘his best future now, even if Boston was not on his original two-team list of destinations (Miami and Phoenix).’

Here’s Helin’s full explanation of how Durant’s camp is essentially using Shams Charania and other media leakers to create their own leverage for a deal and take away Brooklyn’s bargaining power in order to strengthen the roster he’d be joining by trade:

"“This is where we start connecting the dots: 1) The phrasing “Boston’s package centering around All-Star forward Jaylen Brown is seen as a viable deal” suggests the Durant camp thinks offers are not getting much better than that; 2) A discussion of how well Durant gets along with Celtics coach Ime Udoka, going back to their Team USA days, was added at the end of the story.”“Those aren’t just throw-away lines. That’s not how a well-sourced Charania writes, especially when he can’t just come out and say something directly. This sounds like the Durant camp recognizing the best offer on the table can land the star on a title contender in Boston.”"

The Boston Celtics could benefit from the bad blood between the Brooklyn Nets and Kevin Durant

With every breadcrumb of information that comes out about the dissention between Kevin Durant and Brooklyn, Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens, one thinks, is continuing to lick his chops getting ready to swindle the Nets just as his predecessor Danny Ainge did nine years ago.

If Durant is convinced Boston really is his best future at this point, he is going to get his way. Jaylen Brown is already seen as the best trade chip in a deal and while he and Kyrie Irving didn’t hit it off in a Celtics uniform, things could be different under a new head coach in a new city. Also, for all we know, Irving could be traded as well himself.

It’s a player’s league, and luckily with Ime Udoka, the Boston Celtics are a player-friendly organization to play for. Don’t be surprised to see KD and the Cs continually linked until something happens in this trade sweepstakes.
