Nerlens Noel

Trading for Nerlens Noel as a salary dump would open up a world of possibilities for the Boston Celtics in the trade market this offseason due to how similar his game is to that of starting center Robert Williams III.

Noel could slide into the place of ‘Time Lord’ in the starting lineup if Celtics President of Basketball Operations wanted to use Williams as a trade piece in a larger package for a star. Williams’ near-$11 million salary is one that can be aggregated with Derrick White’s, Daniel Theis’, or even Al Horford’s if the Cs were on the precipice of trading for a star that’d fit alongside Marcus Smart and the ‘Jays’ in the frontcourt. Rudy Gobert is one upgrade that’d make a good deal of sense in that scenario.

Alternatively, Noel could be the perfect fill-in for Williams that allows Ime Udoka to preserve his starting big throughout the long season and keep him healthy for the next bid for Banner 18.

Either way, Noel is a classic center that could be superfluous in New York with Mitchell Robinson more than likely re-signing on a big-money extension. He’d be better off in Boston contending for a title than having the same role on an imperfect Knicks roster.
