There’s an argument that Jaylen Brown should be here, but the play of Derrick White will be essential against a smaller Warriors lineup. Coach Steve Kerr will likely go to the Draymond at center lineup to both close games and when Looney’s off the floor, surrounding him with four above-average shooters outside.

Like Smart, White will be assigned with navigating screens when he’s on the floor, looking to stay with Thompson and Curry. The combination of Smart and White is the most equipped backcourt to counter the Warriors’ strict motion offense, one that rarely runs traditional pick-and-rolls unlike some of the Celtics’ prior opponents.

As the series progresses, don’t be surprised if White ends up in the closing five over someone like Robert Williams to buy into the importance of perimeter defense against the 3x champs.

He began to hit his 3-pointers in Game 6 and Game 7 when the Heat decided to not cover him. If that trend can continue, he becomes extremely important and effective, acting as a 3-and-D guard who can also handle the ball, distribute, and even rim protect.

There’s a possibility that White cannot hit a shot from outside, clogging up the Celtics’ offense for both Tatum and Brown. However, should he force the Warriors to respect his perimeter game enough to guard him, he’ll see the court more than anyone else on the bench.
