Boston Celtics offseason transaction No. 3: Signing a veteran free agent ring-chaser

Even if the Celtics bow out the final round before the NBA Finals for the fourth time in six years, Boston should be well established as a true contender at this point, with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown emerging as true superstar options after showing flashes as first and second-year players back in 2018.

At some point, ring-chasers should view the Eastern Conference franchise tied with the most championships in league history as a viable option to take less money with in order to make those title dreams a reality.

After the 2020 bubble playoffs, Boston was able to add Tristan Thompson, but it took the MLE to get it done. This summer, the Cs should be able to vie for the services of someone like him–though not specifically him due to how his first stint went–and not have to pay an arm and a leg to land him.

Potential veteran free agent steals include a Rajon Rondo reunion, bringing Carmelo Anthony to his greatest adversary while he was a New York Knick, or adding a score-first big man like LaMarcus Aldridge.

Whoever Boston hunts for, they should be in the mix for someone at the lowest possible salary figure looking to win a late-career title.
