Boston Celtics adjustment No. 2) Attack to the rim more often

While the Boston Celtics may have pulled out a victory in Game 2 against Milwaukee, the way in which they did it may put a few people off.

For the second consecutive game, the C’s chucked up more 3-pointers than 2-pointers, totaling 93 attempts from this range during this time span.

Now, in today’s game, it’s by no means an uncommon practice to see ball clubs look to live and die by the 3-ball, and, fortunately for Boston, they managed to live large in their second outing because of it, converting on 46.5 percent of these types of shots.

That said, considering the makeup of this team’s roster and the personnel that they have in tow (just two prominent players are shooting over 36 percent from distance this year), this type of offensive gameplan is not something that should be viewed as sustainable moving forward.

Settling for these types of shots simply limits the overall productivity for the team’s offense, and we saw firsthand in this outing that, when the shots weren’t falling, the Celtics struggled mightily on this side of the ball, as they were outscored in the third period 26-18 whilst making just two of their 11 attempts from deep.

Fortunately, the team managed to find their rhythm once again in the fourth and, as a result, sealed the game but, to us, their third-quarter turnout is indicative of just how volatile a dependency on 3-pointers can be and, in Game 3, they must look to attack the rim and hit the mid-range far more often than they have in the first two outings, for these are traditionally easier shots to come by and, if they’re successful on these fronts, it could only help open things up beyond the perimeter as well.
