Star #2 Boston Celtics have the assets to land in the offseason: Jimmy Butler

Jimmy Butler’s first season with the Miami Heat resulted in a run to the NBA Finals that included an Eastern Conference finals triumph over the Celtics down in the Lake Buena Vista bubble in 2020.

Last year’s postseason saw the then-defending east champs bounced in the first-round by the eventual NBA Champion Milwaukee Bucks.

This year, the relationship between Butler and head coach Erik Spoelstra deteriorated in an inappropriately public way during the team’s March 23rd loss to the Golden State Warriors. Quite frankly, if the Heat disappoint in the playoffs as a top seed this year, Butler could be on the move yet again in a career that has seen three team switches in the past five years.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst questioned the Butler-Heat fit long-term:

"“The Jimmy Butler-Erik Spoelstra thing, ya know, Jimmy Butler grinds on his teammates,” said Windhorst (transcript via Heat Nation’s David Akerman). “I mean, he brings a lot to the table. There’s been several organizations that have been like, ‘We are ready for him to be out of here.’ And there’s been organizations where he’s been ready to be out of there. There is not a long history of harmonious marriages there for Jimmy. So, when I’m seeing Spoelstra and I’m seeing Spoelstra saying to him, and I know it’s heat of the moment, ‘I always knew you were crazy,’ I think he’s speaking from his heart there. I think he does mean that. So I wonder, not only about this season, I wonder about Jimmy Butler long term in Miami, especially since he’s right on the edge there where his age and he’s been banged up a little bit, I just, I wonder about that.”"

Given Miami’s previously registered interest in acquiring Jaylen Brown just this past season ahead of the trade deadline, Boston could absolutely land Butler with their second best asset as a trade chip.
