Boston Celtics problem No. 3) Derrick White’s shooting stroke

Though this problem is specifically an individual dilemma, it has negatively affected the Boston Celtics in a major way in the regular season and could wind up having an even greater impact on the team’s championship aspirations moving forward into the playoffs.

Since being acquired at this year’s trade deadline, combo guard, Derrick White, has managed to provide many positive contributions to this C’s squad–from defense to hustle, passing to leadership, the 27-year-old has been an overall positive commodity thus far into his tenure donning green and white threads.

However, of all the ways in which the veteran has benefited Boston, oftentimes we see them be overshadowed by one of the most glaring weaknesses within his game.

Of course, we’re talking about his shooting stroke or, rather, the one in which he lacks.

Through 21 games played, White finds himself converting on a putrid 37.8 percent of his attempts from the floor and an even worse 25.8 percent shooting from deep.

Despite these lowly shooting splits, however, the guard still ranks within the top-four on the team in attempts from both of these pivotal areas of the floor.

Obviously, this is not a recipe for success in the long term.

Frankly, it’s not as if we’re seeing him take bad shots, ones where he’s constantly chucking the ball from beyond the arc whilst draped by tight coverage.

Instead, we’re actually seeing him in prime positions to get a score quite often, be it when he’s got a step on his defender on his way to the rim, in push-shots from about eight to ten feet out, or in wide-open sets from beyond the arc.

Unfortunately, more often than not, he’s missing in these types of scenarios, which severely hinders the team’s chances of winning, being that he’s one of the most utilized offensive weapons they have.

Should Derrick White manage to find a way to tap into something similar to his 2019-20 self, without a doubt he’d be able to become a perfect sixth-man option for this Boston Celtics squad.

That said, should his struggles continue, it could very well prove to be a main contributing factor to an earlier-than-desired playoff ending.
