Boston Celtics player No. 3) Marcus Smart

It’s true that Marcus Smart has changed his reputation for the better over the past few months, playing some of the best brand of basketball of his career. However, with the acquisition of Derrick White, there seems to be a bit of overlap between the two in terms of on-court skills and roles.

It wouldn’t be completely out of the realm of possibility to see Smart moved in the offseason, with White taking over the point guard duties. There’s only a small drop-off on the defensive side of the ball, and White is a much more polished scorer with the ball in his hands.

Smart’s under contract for the next four seasons at a reasonable number, so Boston would need to be receiving a major upgrade in terms of a wing shooter or experienced ball-handler. Removing Smart from the team’s core when he’s made strides each and every game as the team’s true point guard would be a tough pill to swallow, but not out of the question.

The truth of the matter is, as currently constructed, the Boston Celtics don’t have many tradeable contracts besides the newly acquired White. After Horford, Smart is the second most available asset and a player that could change the outlook of a team’s season.

They would have to get a monster deal in return, but Marcus Smart’s future in Celtic green is still in jeopardy.
