The NBA trade deadline dramatically reshaped the Boston Celtics roster for the second straight year in a row.

Daniel Theis was involved both years but is now back home with the team that gave him his NBA shot, and also paid him handsomely in doing so. The contract he signed with the Houston Rockets was even richer, and he’s back in a familiar friendly environment. It took three expiring contracts to make the money work.

Derrick White was the other acquisition, and it took a handsome sum of draft capital and two wings.

For those counting at home, that’s more outbound roster spots than incoming roster spot occupiers. That needs to change, and change soon:

With the Cs forced to sign someone, who should they pursue? Hardwood Houdini likes the following two options:

Boston Celtics free agent #1: Greg Monroe

We know Brad Stevens can’t contain himself when it comes to bringing back players he coached, so he might as well add his third former 5-man, Greg Monroe.

Monroe tore it up for the Milwaukee Bucks in limited appearances, scoring nine points in three of his 10 games with the defending NBA Champions. He’d add everything that was lost in Enes Kanter Freedom’s departure and then provide far more defensive value.

Boston Celtics free agent #2: Dennis Smith Jr.

Dennis Smith Jr. had a three-game stretch where he scored 26 points, dished out 18 assists, and collected 16 boards this season.

The 2017 lottery pick’s efficiency has improved drastically with the Portland Trail Blazers this year, but his time with the team was terminated due to an injury that should sideline him for some time.

If Smith can return to the lineup in time for the postseason, perhaps a flier is worth considering for the NC State product.
