Buyout candidate Boston Celtics should avoid No. 2) Derrick Favors

Derrick Favors was a player that many believed would be dealt at this year’s deadline due to his expiring contract and, well, his presence on the rebuilding OKC Thunder.

Ultimately, however, he remained in tow and now, as of this writing, is in an awkward position being a 30-year-old on a team looking to heavily embark on a youth movement.

Oklahoma City General Manager, Sam Presti, has been known to be a fair front office worker who possesses a proven track record of giving his veterans what they want which, as of late, is a way out of town.

While they didn’t move him at the deadline, it’s almost certain that the two parties will look into working together on a potential buyout where, in turn, the seasoned big can hit the free agency market to try and land himself with a contender in need of some frontcourt depth and, though the Boston Celtics may be able to be described in this way, we at HH aren’t fond of the concept of seeing him donning green and white threads.

Yes, we agree that the C’s should be interested in the idea of strengthening their big-man rotation with one of their remaining roster spots for, outside of Robert Williams III (who, mind you, is always an injury risk), Al Horford (has been up and down all season), and Daniel Theis the frontcourt is a bit lacking, especially in the size department.

That said, Stevens needs to pursue players who he can trust will be available and effective when called upon and, well, the OKC big just hasn’t been that as of late.

Over the past four years, Favors’ production has continuously regressed and now, through 38 games played in 2021-22, he’s posting mere averages of just 5.3 points and 4.8 rebounds all while dealing with numerous injuries throughout, spanning from his knee to his back.

On top of all this, as we stated earlier the Boston Celtics could use a bit of help in the size department, and, though he’s a rather burly man, he’s not even taller than any of the other mainstays down low in Udoka’s lineup (stands at 6-9).

Add all of this together with the fact that he is simply incapable of stretching the floor (again, Boston should seriously be looking into player who can shoot the 3-ball), and there seems to be no logical reason for why the Celtics should be interested in pursuing the likes of Derrick Favors if he’s bought out.
