The NBA Trade Deadline could truly go in any which direction based on what has been rumored and what we’ve already seen so far. As I tend to forewarn fans of this most unpredictable league, and one of the league’s more unpredictable franchises’ fanbases (that of the Boston Celtics): buckle up.

Sacramento didn’t surprise us with their incompetence, but they did surprise us in being so aggressive in landing Domantas Sabonis from the Indiana Pacers. They already have Richaun Holmes in tow, though perhaps he’s next on the move. On the flip side, Indiana did get a shocking amount of value for an ill-fitting piece.

But enough about teams that likely aren’t postseason-bound. Kings fans may save that last sentence if their team breaks through. Pacers fans too.

Let’s instead talk about the red-hot Boston Celtics. We may have some buyers here at the deadline folks.

And in the NBA, buying means giving up young players with upside and draft picks in an effort to extract a veteran from a taking team.

Enter Terrence Ross.

Ross has been mentioned as a target all season with the arrival of Franz Wagner on the wing for the Orlando Magic. Gary Washburn has revealed how that hypothetical can become a reality on the latest edition of the A List Podcast on CLNS Media (transcript via CelticsBlog):

"“I think Terrence Ross would be the best-case scenario, for someone that they could get… They’re going to want a Romeo maybe, Nesmith, they’re going to want more young bodies or maybe a first-round pick for Terrence Ross.”"

The Boston Celtics should avoid an overpay for Terrence Ross

Romeo Langford and Aaron Nesmith for Terrence Ross? Okay, that could work. As would a first-round pick (perhaps protected a bit) in a separate scenario.

Let’s not get too crazy trying to land Ross, though. Guys like Josh Hart could potentially be available and with the opportunity to be in Boston for a long time.

Ross would be a rental that only moves the needle for the next few months before potentially heading elsewhere in the summer if the price tag swells up too much.
