Why the Boston Celtics do it

Christian Wood is good enough to supplant Al Horford in the starting lineup, but he’d be a damn good super-sub if Ime Udoka decided to stick with Horford alongside Robert Williams in the starting lineup.

It doesn’t really matter what Udoka decides. Wood is the kind of addition that could seriously elevate the Cs no matter how you slice it.

Wood has shot 37% on 3-pointers in five attempts per game the last two seasons, and would give Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and the rest of Boston’s cutting wings would see plenty of space with defenses zeroing in on the six-foot-10 big beyond the arc.

Why the Houston Rockets do it

At 15-39, the Rockets are going absolutely nowhere fast. What’s the point of having Christian Wood on the roster?

There is none. But there is a point to hoarding draft picks for any veteran left on the books. With Houston’s roster being so young, drafting guys around their age in the coming years will allow them to field a roster capable of growing together.

Two draft picks for Christian Wood is a great return, especially with one of them being in the first round.
