With the checks Marcus Smart is about to cash in the coming years with the Boston Celtics, he is no longer the desirable trade asset he once was as a stealth play.

Dunking With Wolves doesn’t even want to see Pat Beverley be the main trade piece in order to get the perennial DPOY candidate.

Smart’s inconsistency is having his production fall short of the costs for his services. You never know whether he’ll give you a game above his season average or a sub-33% shooting performance.

Even the 33-year-old Beverley is seen as a situationally superior (as in, for these current Wolves) asset to Smart at this point in the game, according to Ben Beecken:

"The Celtics guard is about to turn 28 years old and will be 31 when the current contract ends. It isn’t a smart play for a Wolves team that needs as much shooting as they can get, and sending out Beverley for Smart doesn’t markedly improve the team elsewhere, either. And that’s to say nothing about the potential impact on the locker room if the Wolves were to jettison the popular Beverley."

In the right situation, Marcus Smart would be a perfect player for a contender looking to make the kind of runs the Cs have been able to make in two of the last four seasons. Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens could ultimately decide that the TD Garden is still home to that arrangement, but it’s certainly no surprise to see Smart’s name back in the rumor mill, with Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report throwing this one out into the ether.

Smart has seemingly been on the trade block since 2018, when names like Kawhi Leonard and Anthony Davis were being floated as Cs possibilities, but yet in green he remains.

Don’t expect him in Minnesota, although keep an eye on the Wolves. Talks of a Josh Richardson-Malik Beasley swap have recently surfaced, so the front offices do appear familiar at the very least.
