With the trade deadline approaching, the Boston Celtics are moving the needle closer to buyer territory.

The Cs have won three straight games and finished January 10-6 after appearing unlikely to qualify for the NBA postseason without needing to win NBA Play-in games first.

And those wins came against quality competition too, including two postseason contenders in 2021-22 and an Atlanta Hawks team that’s less than a year removed from an Eastern Conference finals berth.

So do we trust that this run is legitimate? Boston has been building up fans’ hopes all season only to lose games in unfathomable ways, and Friday night’s matchup in Detroit against a Pistons team tied for dead-last in the NBA with 12 wins screams ‘trap game’.

Hardwood Houdini has a prediction, odds, and TV information for the Friday night matchup at the Little Caesars Arena:

Boston Celtics vs. Detroit Pistons odds, spread, over/under

According to WynnBet, the Celtics are a 9.5-point favorite against the Pistons on the road. Detroit is a +350 underdog on the road, with the Cs moneyline set at -450. The over/under for the game has been placed at 214.5 points.

This one will be broadcast locally on NBC Sports Boston, Bally Sports Detroit, and Bally Sports Indiana. You could also catch the action on NBA League Pass.

Celtics vs. Pistons prediction

The Houdini trusts the Celtics to beat the Pistons. Detroit has won one game in the last eight games and is better off trying to land another top pick to ultimately move things forward in the Motor City.

Jabari Smith would be the ideal frontcourt complement to Isaiah Stewart and Saddiq Bey, so figuring out a way to nab him should already be a plan set in motion by the Pistons franchise…whether they’d ever acknowledge it or not (you cannot legally acknowledge that by the way).

Give the Houdini the Cs with the points against a team that showed flashes against Cleveland this past Sunday but ultimately has shown little reason to ever think a blowout loss isn’t always around the corner.

Pick: Celtics -9.5 (-110)
