On Tuesday afternoon, rumblings of a potential divorce between star Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics surfaced via Heavy.com’s, Steve Bulpett. Due to a rather frustrating last two seasons, Bulpett stated that Brown may ask for a trade after this season’s playoffs, putting the C’s in an interesting situation.

As of late, the Boston Celtics have begun to play better, vying for a respectable playoff position.

Winning nine of their last 14, Boston is only six games back from the conference’s number one seed. Hopefully, if the C’s make a late season push, and even win a first-round playoff series, none of this will matter.

However, if Brown sees the championship window in Boston closing, it might be in the 25-year-old’s best interest to take his talents elsewhere.

The Boston Celtics would love to hold onto Jaylen Brown

The California product is only getting better in his sixth year in green, averaging 24.4 points and 6.6 rebounds on 46 percent shooting from the field. He’s started to find his groove as each game means more, scoring 26.1 points per game in January alone.

Brown checks almost every box as a player: he can finish at the rim with intense athleticism, create his own shot off the dribble, shoot off the catch at an efficient rate, and can even lock down some of the league’s best wings in on-ball situations.

The only aspect he’s failed to improve on this season is his distributing ability, often looking out of control with his handle when he’s tried to take control of the offense.

Therefore, his current development would place him as a secondary star on a championship contender.

Obviously, the Boston Celtics would love to keep Jaylen Brown on their roster as long as possible, barring any catastrophic turn.

Brown is in the second year of his four-year, $107 million extension.

There’s no rush to trade the All-Star caliber player, as the team still has time to build around both him and Jayson Tatum for future years.

Despite this, if Brown did request a trade during this upcoming offseason, almost every team would pick up the phone to call Brad Stevens and co.

Squads such as the Memphis Grizzlies, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Atlanta Hawks all have impressive packages of draft capital and young talent to offer in return. These teams would benefit greatly from a player such as Brown — a star who teams don’t have to build their offense around.

Unfortunately, a trade like this would likely set Boston’s championship aspirations back even more, as it would take time to develop their new young talent.

Ideally, the C’s would build a contending-level roster while Tatum’s still under his max-rookie extension, not having to worry about re-signing him once he hits unrestricted free agency.

Bottom line: Jaylen Brown, nor any other player on the Boston Celtics, has been pleased with how the season has shaped up so far and the team as a whole is striving to fix that on a game-by-game basis.

However, if this overarching trend continues, Brown could force his way out of town, leaving the C’s with a major decision to make.
