This offseason, the Boston Celtics extended emerging center Robert Williams to a four-year deal that could be worth up to $54 million.

This led to mixed reactions among C’s fans as they wondered if the front office believed in his future with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown or if he was going to be used in a package for, say, Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal.

Either way, so far this season Williams has answered the call and showed why his contract is a steal.

The big man has taken his game to another level for Boston this season, and he has solidified his position as the starting center for the franchise.

He is currently averaging 10 points, eight rebounds, one assist, and one block per game whilst shooting 74 percent from the field.

Williams has also played in 28 of the team’s 37 games so far this season, which puts him on pace to play the most games in a season for his career.

This is impressive because he has responded after C’s Head Coach, Ime Udoka, challenged him to play more minutes this season.

Williams’ solid play from this season was on full display in a historic performance against the Phoenix Suns on Friday afternoon. He finished the game with 10 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, and five blocks, giving him the first triple-double of his career.

Time Lord’s performance was historic as he became just the ninth player to have a triple-double while shooting 100 percent from the field, and the first player with a five-block triple-double in Boston Celtics history.

The recent play from Williams and his continued improvement exemplify exactly why his contract is a steal.

In his last five games, Williams is averaging 13 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.

I think Williams is a special player because he is an excellent passer and he is a force defensively.

Also, I think that Williams will be the C’s starting center when they are at their peak years with their current core. This is ultimately why I would not trade the 24-year-old unless it is for a top 20 player.

For example, I would include him in a deal for Bradley Beal or Damian Lillard, but I would not include him in a deal for Domantas Sabonis, for I think his potential is too high to risk trading him for anything other than a top 20 talent.

Moving forward, if Williams can stay healthy and keep improving, his contract is going to be beneficial for the Boston Celtics.

As they look to turn things around, Robert Williams is going to be a crucial part of their success.
