Crypto.com Arena doubleheader, .500 could be the C’s situation by Thursday.

That’s certainly not good news considering the defending west champs Phoenix Suns are playing host to Boston on Friday before the Cs host the Milwaukee Bucks and Golden State Warriors at the T.D. Garden.

Things are getting tougher, and things could be coming to a head soon in Beantown with the schedule offering so many contenders in short order.

Could the Boston Celtics make a move to bolster their ranks should the team struggle through this stretch?

Why of course they can. Brad Stevens has done a good job keeping the Cs in a position to strike throughout his first half-year as the President of Basketball Operations.

But just because they can, doesn’t mean they will.

It’s clear the San Antonio Spurs forward Thaddeus Young, who was acquired in the offseason in the sign-and-trade that sent DeMar DeRozan to the Chicago Bulls, is on his way out of the Alamo City. He acknowledged as much on The Alex Kennedy Podcast:

"“At the end of the day, I understand where this franchise is going, and I understand what’s happening — the young guys have to play. Whatever happens, happens,” Young said when discussing his limited role within the Spurs rotation this season."

But Heavy’s Adam Taylor doesn’t believe the Cs will go for what would amount to a one-year rental:

"Boston won’t want to give up any assets to acquire Young due to his age and flight risk during the summer. And as they don’t currently project as contenders this year, the move would likely be a rental for the remainder of the regular season, and however far the team gets in the playoffs."

It’s unclear if Stevens sees this season as one to go all in on. If he does, the Cs have the maneuverability to make several deals to strengthen the team’s second unit.

Armed with the TPE created from the Evan Fournier deal, it would simply take draft capital to bring in more talent. But using expiring deals held by Juan Hernangomez and Dennis Schroder, paired with some of the Boston Celtics’ recent young draft picks, could reel in other pieces.

Are any of the aforementioned assets worth giving up for to gain a player that has gone for 10 points or more just seven of his 19 appearances this season?

Probably not. The Houdini is going to agree with Taylor here: Thaddeus Young is not the kind of target worth pursuing in a season the Cs may not have a shot at the Eastern Conference crown anyway.
