Celtics Wire floats possibility of Daniel Theis reunion with Boston Celtics
Boston Celtics fans, how would you feel about getting to once again be a front-row witness to the ‘War on Theis’?
The former German Cs big man Daniel Theis was traded by ex-GM Danny Ainge to the Chicago Bulls this past February and then was able to land a $36 million deal in free agency with the Houston Rockets.
But you know how current Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens works. If you once played for him during his head coaching days, there could be a roster spot waiting for you in the Ime Udoka era. Especially if you’re a big man. Just ask Al Horford and Enes Kanter Freedom.
Celtics Wire’s Justin Quinn had a very interesting idea in a piece centered around the idea of trading for Rockets center Christian Wood, naming Theis as a potential backup target if Stevens isn’t willing to bite on what Houston wants for Wood:
"If the ask for the 26-year-old forward proves larger than the Celtics are comfortable playing, they might also ask after old friend Daniel Theis, who of course has familiarity with a number of current Celtics even if not new head coach Ime Udoka."
At under $10 million a season, Theis remains good value, even with double the salary he used to make on the Cs during his first go-round.
As the first big off the bench, Theis would finally be in a perfect role in Boston. He did a great job manning the starting pivot spot in 2019-20, when the Cs had their second highest winning percentage of the last decade, but was miscast as a power forward alongside Tristan Thompson in 2020-21, leading to him being traded midseason.
HH would love such a deal if Juan Hernangomez’ salary was used as salary filler to go along with future second round draft capital.
