Boston Celtics: Chris Forsberg believes Dennis Schroder could be traded
By Mark Nilon
The Boston Celtics had themselves quite a busy and eventful offseason, one chock full of front office shakeups, free agency signings, and trades.
While the jury’s still out on several of their summer moves and transactions, through the first 14 games of this year’s campaign one of them undoubtedly seems to be living up to, and even exceeding initial expectations.
That man: Dennis Schroder.
Signed to a one-year, $5.9 million deal back in August after having somewhat of a let-down season in 2020-21 while with the Los Angeles Lakers, the veteran was seen as somewhat of a steal of an acquisition, as he has been one of only 16 players to tally 6,000 points and 1,500 assists since the start of 2016-17.
Looking to build back his reputation the point guard needy Cs were seemingly a perfect place for him to do just that and, thus far, Schroder has been quite effective whilst serving as a key rotational player, making him a relative steal of an acquisition.
Though to some, this impressive production from the 28-year-old is viewed as a tremendous luxury for Boston to have moving forward throughout the season, others are under the impression that he could be used as trade bait at some point between now and this year’s trade deadline.
Celtics Insider, Chris Forsberg, is apparently not opposed to the latter and, in fact, believes that moving the cost-efficient Schroder could theoretically put the franchise in a better position to potentially land another “high-impact”:
"If the Celtics are lingering in the bottom half of the East playoff bracket (or worse) as the calendar flips to 2022, then maybe the team is more inclined to examine trade opportunities with veteran-craving rivals.Schroder’s value to a contender, even as an expiring deal, could help the Celtics fetch draft assets that might be valuable if they desire to trade for an impact talent to pair with Brown and Jayson Tatum further down the road."
In his first season with the Boston Celtics, Schroder is boasting a rather solid stat-line of 17.1 points, 5.2 assists, four rebounds, and 1.1 steals on 44 percent shooting from the floor.
On top of this, during their recent surge, with the Cs having won five of their last seven, the guard has put up scoring averages north of 20 per game on nearly 50 percent shooting from the field.
Now, while Forsberg also stated that Brad Stevens and co. could wind up keeping him in tow for the remainder of his deal should they feel they are legitimate Eastern Conference contenders, based on their current standing this feels somewhat unlikely, but, hey, we’ve still got plenty of time for them to continue on their upward swing.
What say you Boston Celtics fans, are you open to the idea of trading away Dennis Schroder at some point this season for draft capital?
Perhaps you view him as more than just a short-term rental?
