You could call us trade hounds here at Hardwood Houdini. We’re always looking for the next brilliant mock trade to improve a Boston Celtics roster that, so far in 2021-22, looks desperately in need of a shakeup at 6-7.

Whether it be our own or from other sources, that search often brings us to deals that swap youthful Cs prospects for veterans. The level of blockbuster often varies, but the aim is always moving the needle forward.

Well, this past week, a mock deal from NBA Analysis Network involving a player that very well could be the next big salary moved, Terrence Ross, popped up in Boston Celtics circles.

And it includes several prospects and a draft pick:

"Boston Celtics Receive: G Terrence RossOrlando Magic Receive: G/F Aaron Nesmith, F Grant Williams, POR 2023 2nd Round Pick (via BOS)"

For me, this deal is a complete and utter non-starter, despite it being one you probably would have seen this past summer.

The reason? Grant Williams.

Williams has elevated his game to new heights in 2021-22, carving out a role as a corner 3-point marksman in his third year with the team. He has hit 14 of his 35 long-balls, good for a 40% conversion rate from beyond the arc.

Before the season, I would have said that Williams and Aaron Nesmith (plus a future second-round pick) is an ideal package for Ross. But that was before Juan Hernangomez turned out to be a strictly garbage time player.

Williams is too essential to what the Boston Celtics do these days to be moved in such a deal. He may turn out to be a starter by season’s end if he can continue to shoot the ball so efficiently…and if no backup center emerges, making Al Horford most needed in the second unit.

Times have changed. Trading Grant Williams isn’t on the Houdini’s agenda any longer, even for a useful vet like Ross.
