Boston Celtics C Robert Williams could become C’s first DPOY since Kevin Garnett

The C’s Defensive Player of the Year drought is nowhere close to what the team’s MVP drought was. That said, there isn’t a long history of winners from Beantown since the inception of the award during the 1982-83 season.

Only Kevin Garnett has worn Celtics green and won the award, back during the dominant 2007-08 NBA Championship season. That, of course, was the first year of the ‘Big 3’ era with Ray Allen joining Garnett in Boston in the 2007 offseason to join Paul Pierce.

Robert Williams could be the first player in over a decade to win the award, which is shocking considering the reputation Marcus Smart has earned during his time with the Cs. That said, he “merely” has two NBA All-Defensive First Team honors to his name, from both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.

Williams had such honors in the SEC during his collegiate days, so it should only be a matter of time before he takes his Aggie accomplishments at Texas A&M and executes them at the highest level in the world.
