Boston Celtics rumor killer: Jaylen Brown-Ben Simmons trade not happening
It’s not happening. The Boston Celtics aren’t going to send their fanbase into a sweeping storm of tears and outrage by trading Jaylen Brown for Ben Simmons.
Hallelujah.
Things were getting a bit out of hand on Monday morning when Shams Charania sent out a tweet saying that the Cs were considering trading away their leading scorer and second longest-tenured Celtic for a guy who is sitting out this season over disagreements with the staff of the team he plays for.
Fans were not even close to happy about the idea of welcoming in the giant contract of Simmons at the expense of the 2016 #3 pick.
Luckily, Brian Robb of MassLive is here to kill those rumors dead in their tracks:
"Multiple league sources were adamant to MassLive.com that the Celtics have no interest in moving the All-Star Brown in the interim, particularly with him under team control for two more seasons at a below-market deal. 76ers general manager Daryl Morey has always aimed high in trade negotiations throughout his career but this is posturing will likely go nowhere given what’s happened to Simmons’ trade value over the past several months in the midst of his holdout."
It didn’t make sense for Brown to up his value over the season’s opening weeks only to be traded for a player whose value has plummeted from inactivity and needless team drama.
And when we say that Brown has upped his value, we are hoping to be talking in hypothetical terms. The idea of trading Brown away is not one we have unless the offer was too good to be true.
A deal including four years and $140 million of Simmons does not qualify as that.
Breathe a sigh of relief Boston Celtics fans. Brad Stevens is not planning on executing this insane swap anytime soon.
