Boston Celtics: 3 offseason moves Cs could ultimately regret
By Mark Nilon
Potential Boston Celtics regret No. 3) Committing to Robert Williams long-term
Lastly, we have the decision by the decision-makers for the Boston Celtics to shell out a rather lucrative four-year, $54 million contract to their fourth-year big man, Robert Williams III.
Don’t get us wrong, we believe the 23-year-old has an absurd amount of potential to turn into a tremendous starting center in this league, for his rim-protecting skills coupled with his natural passing abilities and astounding athleticism makes him a real threat on both ends of the floor.
The reason why we believe the Cs could wind up regretting their commitment to the Time Lord is not at all indicative of how we feel about him as a player but, rather, his lacking ability to remain healthy.
Throughout his tenure with the franchise, Williams has yet to prove that he can make it through an entire 82 game regular season unscathed, for he has somehow managed to sustain an injury in each of his three previous seasons in the league.
Obviously, we know the impact that he can have on the Celtics when healthy, for, just this past season, he led the team in box plus-minus while having himself a semi-breakout campaign, posting averages of 15.5 points, 13.3 points, 3.5 assists, and 3.4 blocks per 75 possessions on an impressive 72 percent shooting from the floor.
The question is not whether Robert Williams can be of great service to this team moving forward after now securing a long-term deal with the franchise. Instead, it is whether or not he can stay on the floor and consistently be available for them.
Should he remain healthy, we at HH are under the impression that this will wind up turning into a fantastic signing for the Boston Celtics.
However, should he continue on with this unfortunate injury-plagued moniker, Stevens could wind up looking back on this decision to extend him with serious regret.
