Boston Celtics: Warriors signing Isaiah Thomas would be ideal

Former Boston Celtics MVP candidate and postseason folk hero Isaiah Thomas would be a perfect fit for the Golden State Warriors.

At this point, the point guard position is basically Steph Curry for 36-40 minutes, with overtime clocked if need be.

Behind him, the Dubs don’t have much depth. Andre Iguodala’s return could see the former Warrior resume his ball-handling duties in the Bay. Draymond Green also makes things happen as a point forward, but he is still needed as a screener in the pick-and-roll game.

In terms of pure point guards that could contribute right away (Nico Mannion needs more seasoning), guys like Gary Payton II and Mychal Mulder own non-guaranteed deals. They are cuttable if they struggle in the preseason.

As is Thomas.

Rolling the dice on Thomas’ promise that the injury woes are behind him on a similar non-guaranteed pact is a worthy risk for a team that got Iguodola Nemanja Bjelica, and Otto Porter on minimum deals.

Who knows? He may be able to contribute 15 points per game if he has his speed back. In reality, he’ll need to shoot 38% from the 3-point again like he did in his 2016-17. On far less volume of course. Risking his body at the rim isn’t a long-term strategy that sees him contributing as a healthy body in the playoffs.

Either way, it’s worth a shot for a Warriors team that could use a gamble like that getting them into the postseason.

Because as it stands, they might not have enough if Klay Thompson isn’t the player he used to be before a torn ACL and torn Achilles.

Both Los Angeles teams are conference champion worthy, Phoenix should further develop after an NBA Finals appearance, Denver has Jamal Murray back, Utah still has its core, Portland should still be in the mix, New Orleans could get finally realize its potential with Zion Williamson, and Memphis has a Ja Morant that has another year of postseason experience under its belt.

There may not be a postseason spot without a spark like an Isaiah Thomas comeback season.

And that doesn’t need to be another 2016-17 Boston Celtics IT type season either.

What he did back as the third point guard on the Phoenix Suns for a half-season would do the trick.
