Boston Celtics trade deadline target #2: Davis Bertans

It’s never good to see a player regress after handing him a ton of money. While the COVID-19 caveat can theoretically apply to anyone that struggled in the 2020-21 season, seeing a regression in the only two attributes that got someone paid in the first place is damning to say the least.

Davis Bertans was a 3-point sniper that saw his shooting slash from downtown dip below 40% last season, and he saw less time on the floor with Rui Hachimura seeing his own minutes increase, directly leading to a decrease in rebounding.

Washington snuck into the postseason, but they were no match for the Philadelphia 76ers. He was practically unplayable when not hitting shots, with the team picking up their only win of the series while Bertans had his lowest minutes output.

At this point, the Cs are so stacked on the wing that acquiring a power forward at all–which would fundamentally change the way Udoka would allocate minutes to the likes of Jayson Tatum, Josh Richardson, Jaylen Brown, Aaron Nesmith, and Romeo Langford–would need to be justified with a top-line 4.

Bertans’ regression in 2020-21 has the Houdini wondering if he’d be worth the cost it’d take to land him or if it’d be worth cutting into 2022 cap space.

Verdict: Pass
