Why the Boston Celtics do it

Clearing up a roster spot is the name of the game here, but Ty Jerome is a sneaky good pickup for the Cs here. As mentioned in the previous slide, Dennis Schroder is no guarantee to fit in with what Boston is doing after blowing his shot alongside LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and the defending NBA Champions out in Los Angeles.

Jerome’s per-36 minute stats aren’t far off from Schroder’s, but he is a superior 3-point shooter, canning over 42% of his long-range bombs in over five attempts per game.

Why the Oklahoma City Thunder do it

Jerome’s value isn’t exorbitantly high, so it’s not as though teams will be clamoring to give up more to get him. Taking a chance on Grant Williams and/or Carsen Edwards isn’t the most difficult decision for a team to justify given their salaries.

That’s especially true for the Thunder, who are essentially a salary-dump franchise that may not be looking to actively trade in order to improve their current situation themselves for a long time.

This is a harmless move for both sides, but definitely moves OKC closer to losing…which may be their goal yet again this upcoming season. Who knows? Maybe Williams turns out to be the perfect small-ball center for a lineup that has serious facilitation from its backcourt.

And maybe Edwards could be a part of the fun too, splashing home 3-pointer after 3-pointer from Josh Giddey and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander feeds.
