A recent public appearance by Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum opened up pandora’s box a bit as the offseason chatter shifts from free agency to the impending NBA schedule.
At a charity softball game, Tatum was seen photographed alongside two current NBA players and former Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce.
One of the players was recently signed Los Angeles Lakers free agency Trevor Ariza. Ariza is joining the Lakers for the second time in his career after helping L.A. win a title in 2009.
The other is still a free agent and happens to be a former collegiate teammate of Tatum, Harry Giles…
What does this mean for the Cs this offseason? Is Giles going to be the next free agent signing of Brad Stevens’ first summer in charge?
The Boston Celtics don’t need Harry Giles because they have Bruno Fernando
The Summer League Cs played extremely well until they ran into a brick wall in the form of Davion Mitchell’s Sacramento Kings this past August in Las Vegas. Part of the reason why is because Bruno Fernando established himself as a paint threat on both sides of the ball.
Acquired from the Atlanta Hawks as part of the three-team deal that rid the roster of Tristan Thompson, Fernando could develop into a defensive-minded third big should Enes Kanter continue to prove unplayable in the postseason.
Last season, Fernando was buried on the bench in Atlanta, but he already has established chemistry with the likes of Payton Pritchard, Aaron Nesmith, and Romeo Langford.
Giles may have come into the league with slightly more upside, even with an ACL tear in college, but at this point, Fernando is under contract and spent valuable time on the floor with the C’s young second unit in the Summer League.
It’s doubtful Stevens would hunt for a Fernando deal just to make way for Giles.
