Boston Celtics PG Kris Dunn

Kris Dunn came to Boston as part of the three-team deal that sent Tristan Thompson to Sacramento. It seemed like a stealthy move by Brad Stevens at the time, especially considering he landed two players with more upside and room to grow than the ill-fitting Thompson.

It may be even more of a stealthy play now if Stevens can pull off a deal for Dunn now that Dennis Schroder has been acquired at an almost identical value:

Dunn being dealt opens up another $5 million TPE that could be saved until next summer, whereas the $5 million created by the Daniel Theis trade during this past trade deadline will expire mid-season.

The idea of having four different TPEs worth $5+ million is an appealing one for most general managers, but we know that Stevens is one that is simply dangerous with that at his disposal.

At worst, this would create four workarounds to limited cap space next summer, where he can land four different players to add to his locked-in contracted core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, and Robert Williams, plus every rookie drafted 2019 or later still on the roster by then.
