Boston Celtics PF/C Grant Williams

Perhaps Brad Stevens didn’t feel Grant Williams playing in Summer League was very necessary earlier this month with the first NBA Las Vegas run in over two years.

Ultimately, though, those could have been valuable reps for Williams to further gel with the likes of Aaron Nesmith, Romeo Langford, and Payton Pritchard, who are ticketed to bench minutes based off how last season ended.

With the additions of Al Horford, Enes Kanter, and Bruno Fernando, Williams may not find bench minutes readily available. He doesn’t provide the rebounding that a Kanter or Fernando do, and he’s behind Horford as a facilitator at the 4.

Williams could soon follow his pandemic roommate Kemba Walker out of Boston if the frontcourt logjam squeezes him out of a meaningful role. He has glue-guy potential on a young team with less win-now ambitions than Boston.

The Memphis Grizzlies would be an ideal destination given his Tennessee ties, but teams like the Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers have more non-guaranteed deals to dangle in a potential trade.

Williams was an effective small-ball 5 for Boston, but Brad Stevens didn’t just give Robert Williams a $54 million extension to sit on the bench.
