Boston Celtics PF/C Grant Williams

Grant Williams has done a good job of expanding his skillset since being drafted in 2019 out of Tennessee with one of Boston’s first-round selections. No longer relying on pure physicality and athleticism, Williams is aiming to do more on the floor to adjust to the NBA level.

His per-36 minutes assist totals have not yet reached the facilitation levels he reached in his senior season on Rocky Top, but his 3-point shooting in 2021-22 with the Cs was his best output in his five seasons in the SEC/NBA.

So, “why is the Houdini so ready to let him go?”, might be the first question on your mind here. And I understand why it’s being asked.

But the answer is simple. With the influx of wings needing minutes (Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Aaron Nesmith, Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford), there will not be many available minutes at the 4 for the prototypical power forward.

And given the additions of Al Horford, Enes Kanter, and Bruno Fernando at the 5, Williams may need Ime Udoka to be big on small ball to see the floor at all.

That just might not be in the cards. Williams could be squeezed out of the rotation altogether, and could even have the ability to fetch a return that includes a draft pick or two to use in a future Bradley Beal/Damian Lillard trade package should either guy become available midseason.
