Were the Boston Celtics the first and last team to give Tremont Waters a chance?

Tremont Waters was always battling an uphill climb in making it in the NBA because of his size. Obviously, Boston is the first place that can tell you that heart over height is more than just a catchy saying–given the dominance of the five-foot-nine messaiah Isaiah Thomas in green–but Waters never quite found his footing as a late second-round pick in his two years with the Cs.

And look, we’ll slap the same caveat onto the Waters case that we did with Kornet’s about thoe past two seasons being abnormal ones.

But ultimately, Waters no longer has a role on the point guard heirarchy given the additions of the past two offseasons. In 2020 Danny Ainge drafted two point guards with his late first round pick and second round pick, adding 2020-21 rookie Payton Pritchard and potential 2021-22 rookie Yam Madar. Both of those guys would find time on the floor before Waters did this upcoming season.

So, without a job in Boston, the question then becomes who would give Waters a chance. The 2021 draft was a loaded one, and second-round picks like Sharife Cooper and Ayo Dosunmu look likelier to stick than Waters does after two years in the assocation.

It may take a season or two before Waters has value once again on the open market. He may be looking at a season overseas to rebuild his stock.
