The Boston Celtics may have remained quiet through the first week of 2021’s free agency period, but week number two has the potential to be rather explosive should recent rumblings prove to be true.

According to Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype, league sources have informed the NBA writer that the Cs “have interest in signing free-agent point guard Dennis Schroeder.”

"The Celtics have the non-taxpayer mid-level exception at their disposal and could agree to a short-term deal. Schroeder and the Celtics could agree to a one-year deal or a two-year deal with a player option, league sources said."

Frankly, with the fact that Boston obviously could use for more options for Ime Udoka to work with in the backcourt rotation, many of us at HH believe that a pursuit of the veteran guard would make sense.

Based on a recent article by Bleacher Report, it would appear that they, too, are under this same belief, and even devised a sign-and-trade scenario with the Los Angeles Lakers that would send Schroeder from LA to Boston.

The specific deal proposed reads as follows:

Citing the team’s need for a tertiary scoring option to play meaningful minutes alongside stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, coupled with their need for more reliable options at the point guard position, writer, Dan Favale, believes that the Boston Celtics should strongly consider the idea of dealing for him, and a starting salary of $9.5 million could be in the realm of possibility.

Frankly, at this price range, we couldn’t agree more that adding Schroeder would be a solid move for the shamrocks to make.

Despite not playing well enough this past season for him to nab his desired $100-$120 million salary on the open market, he did prove that he’s still a solid starting guard in this league who easily deserves to be rostered for the upcoming campaign and, at the $9 to $10 million price range he could prove to be a relative steal.

After finishing second in the running for Sixth Man of the Year in 2019-20, Schroeder went on to serve as the defending champion, Los Angeles Lakers’ starting one where he posted per-game averages of 15.4 points, 5.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.1 steals.

On a team-friendly, short-term deal adding a guy of Schroder to the roster of the cash-strapped Boston Celtics could be a smart move for Brad Stevens and co. to consider making this summer.
