Boston Celtics morale-boosting free agent #2: Aron Baynes
Aron Baynes was not the fit that the
Toronto
Tampa Raptors the 2018-19 champs were looking for on the floor last season, so instead of ponying up and giving the Aussie another $7 million, they cut him loose onto the free-agent market.
That could benefit him if he lands in the right spot. Both the Phoenix Suns and Boston Celtics proved to be such the past few years, but the Cs are the only team with a potential spot open after the defending Western Conference champions signed JaVale McGee to be their backup.
We saw Danny Ainge store several bigs on his depth chart, so perhaps Brad Stevens takes his lead and brings on another after the Enes Kanter signing this past week. Baynes would likely take a similar deal.
The fact that there is energy out there that the Cs might have made a mistake in choosing Kanter over Baynes means that Stevens should consider righting the ship and bringing on the bulky big from down under to once again man the middle alongside Al Horford in a pairing that once thrived in Beantown.
Cs fans would certainly be happy about it at the very least.
