It’s okay to feel impatient Boston Celtics fans. Newly minted President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens has done damage in the trade market this offseason, but he has done little in the way of bolstering the depth chart during free agency.

Enes Kanter was returned to the roster, but little else was accomplished. Bringing on a third-string center for the veteran’s minimum because he’s been played off the floor before seems like a minimal move on paper, but there is potential for him to get the team buckets when few else in the young second unit can.

Signing that sort of in-a-pinch producer is prudent at the price, but ultimately the Cs will need more if they want to compete in 2021-22.

And they can compete. There is a misnomer going around that this is a team with all sights set on the summer of 2022, but teams with plenty of veteran’s minimum type guys can still win a title. Just ask the 2019-20 Los Angeles Lakers.

Plenty of vets from that team left in free agency the following year, but the ultimate goal was still accomplished. That could happen this coming season, even if Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Al Horford, and Marcus Smart are a tad less of a fearsome group than the LeBron James and Anthony Davis-led Lakers were/are.

Stevens needs to go for it and try to sign the following free agents to bolster Boston Celtics fan morale:

Boston Celtics morale-boosting free agent #1: Dennis Schroder

This is easily the biggest potential needle-mover on the market. Dennis Schroder wanted a contract worth in excess of $80 million this offseason, but in truth, he isn’t going to sniff that.

That should result in a sizable chip on his shoulder this coming season that includes hopes of showing the league that they made a big mistake not pursuing him harder. If he falls to the Cs at the MLE, plenty of teams will have decided a pretty small pay-day wasn’t worth it.

Let’s hope that would all lead to a 2008 Rajon Rondo-Esque run as the floor general for a winning Cs team.
