Boston Celtics: 3 players Cs could sign during first week of free agency
By Mark Nilon
The NBA Draft came and went this past July and, though the event was rather exciting for a large number of organizations, the Boston Celtics were, unfortunately, not one of them.
Despite seeing a few blockbuster moves on the night and a plethora of draft picks being swapped, the Cs remained rather silent which, in truth, was a bit of an odd sight to see considering they’ve found themselves heavily intertwined in the draft night rumor mill for the better part of the past decade.
But what’s done is done and now, with this illustrious occasion in the rearview, Boston can now focus their attention on more eventful offseason endeavors, with the next happening on the docket being free agency.
Though the Boston Celtics may not have much wiggle room when it comes to salary space, there is still a chance that the front office can work their magic and sign some quality talents on the open market.
Though they may not be able to snag the top-flight names available in this year’s class, the Houdini is under the impression that Brad Stevens and co. already have a few players in mind that they believe could be of great value to the franchise heading into 2021-22 and, in all honesty, could be signed right within the first week of this year’s free agency period.
Today, we present to you 3 players we believe could be brought to Beantown rather soon:
Boston Celtics free agent target No. 1) Evan Fournier
Recent reports have surfaced that suggest Evan Fournier and the Boston Celtics are “far apart” in their contract negotiations.
While this certainly does sound like upsetting news to hear, one mustn’t lose sight of the silver lining found in this aforementioned scenario — negotiations have at least begun.
A bit cheap? Perhaps, but that doesn’t make it any less true.
The fact that they’re already in the midst of talks suggests that the franchise has the upper hand in comparison to other teams that could be interested in courting the sharpshooter this summer, for they already know where his head’s at in terms of both goals and desired pay day.
Should they wish to ultimately sign him at an in-between salary of what they’re willing to pay and what Fournier is currently looking to get ($80 million over four years) they’d get first dibs on doing so and, quite frankly, they should look to do everything in reason to keep him in tow.
A fantastic tertiary scoring compliment for Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, Fournier posted solid overall season averages of 17.1 points on 46 percent shooting from the field and 41 percent shooting from deep while also boasting a stellar efficient field goal percentage of 75 in catch-and-shoot scenarios.
