Free agency begins tonight, and when it does, there will be eyes on multiple free-agent point guards by Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens. While not exclusively focusing on PGs, Stevens is sure to shore up the weakest current position on the depth chart.
The Cs nabbed Kris Dunn, but a volatile trade market could have him rerouted any day. Even still, there are veteran point guards on the market that will be motivated to lift Boston in hopes of a bigger long-term payday in the future.
For these 3 point guards, taking a player option on a two-year deal with the MLE for a contender could be the best route to take. If Stevens can convince these free agents things will be different under first-year HC Ime Udoka, expect a pursuit of these floor generals:
Boston Celtics MLE point guard pursuit #1: Spencer Dinwiddie
There was serious smoke to a Spencer Dinwiddie-D.C. fire but those flames were fanned when the Brooklyn Nets said ‘pass’ on Kyle Kuzma and Montrezl Harrell.
With Dinwiddie now an option for teams like the New Orleans Pelicans, Oklahoma City Thunder, and New York Knicks, punch in the Boston Celtics as a potential play for the former 20-point-per-game scorer.
The on-court fit with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown should be a far snugger one than fellow Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving’s was, and having experience playing for Ime Udoka figures to facilitate any segue smoothly.
The key will be locking Dinwiddie down to a deal he can opt out of after a big year. 2022 is clearly what Stevens is saving up all his chips for with all of his recent deals for expiring contracts.
